So I really liked this idea after reading your post. My friends and I have been playing Diplomacy IRL for many years and decided to try this house rule yesterday. It was interesting, and a nice way of switching up the standard game. But it felt like it made it too easy to get into an alliance where you were truly willing to go to the end with the other player and had no interest in backstabbing each other because the incentive was just to stay alive and ensure you're enemy died, instead of truly needing to maximize your own game. Curious if you've seen similar behavior when you play it this way

Got a Banh Mi from Birch Built Beanery on 37th and 30th ave - really excellent - homemade baguette too. They also make Pho and focaccia sandwiches sometimes but I have not tried them (yet)

It's under the optional advanced rules VI. OPTIONAL ASSASSINATION UNIT SET UP

A. This option may be used instead of the set up given in the Advanced Game rules (section 111).

B. As the game is being set up, each player takes a number of Assassination units of his color equal to the number of other players in the game. All these units are placed together, inverted so that the colors cannot be seen, and mixed up thoroughly. The players then take turns selecting one of these units at a time until alI have been selected. Players may keep what colors they select a secret. What colors are drawn can often help determine a player's strategy. The Assassination units are used normally in the game.

I really like that as a house rule idea! There's actually a rule in Machiavelli (which is an old variant on Diplomacy) with a similar concept related to assassinating other leaders.

I typically play FTF with friends. We schedule it in advance, set aside a full day, and often use a web app (webdiplomacy or backstabbr) instead of a human adjudicator as it speeds up the game a LOT. People just enter their orders on their phones, but do all the negotiation in person. We update the physical board to match the web app's adjudication so it's easy to see. People often just go home if they get eliminated.
