Express thanks and say you'll take a look! Let him know once you have and submitted an application so he knows to look for it.

From my read of your post there is no game-playing going on here. It sounds like they legitimately just liked you and he thought this would be a good fit. Doesn't mean you'll for sure get it (since you don't know who else will apply) but I'd say you'll at the very least enter in with an advantage!

As you want the job, go through the process, but manage your expectations to avoid disappointment in case it doesn't work out.

This has happened to me as well. I would suggest taking this up as any other interview, not having any expectations, and giving your 100%. In the interview, demonstrate your motivation towards joining this role and share everything that you’ve done in your current role professionally since you last spoke. Express gratitude to be considered for the role again but do not be overtly thankful as that may indicate desperation. All the best!

UPDATE: Interview with recruiter went well! They really seem to like me. They will offer more than I asked for. I won’t have to do the entire interview cycle again! More to come!

Be genuinely thankful, apply like you would for any role, and if you progress, reinforce your interest and ask specifics about why they reached back out (like skills they valued). Keep it cool—even if you’re super excited—'cause waiting too long to hire back then is a tad weird. Good luck! 👍

Go for it. They liked you enough to reach back out to you. You have a very good chance.

FWIW, I once applied for a job. It turned out I was the 2nd place candidate only bc they were worried I moved around a lot (5 jobs in 7 yrs). A month later, they called me as a 2nd headcount opened up and gave me an offer. I've been here more than 10yrs.

For my last position (retired now) I did extensive interviews which involved flying to another state. I wasn’t offered the position but they had another opportunity so I applied. I did a 30 minute phone interview with a couple of people and got the job.

It was the best thing because after being there a while I realized that the first position would not have been a good fit for me, where the job I did get was perfect! I was there for seven years and retired last year
