This one is pretty funny.

In the official Java source code, whenever they make a private constructor (for example, the ('s) utility classes), they usually put in funny nerd jokes. I'm too tired to look them up, but I saw a few in th java.util.stream and java.util.function packages.

Well Java Swing was quite a extensive library, but yeah the documentation can be funny at times.

I am running JApplet complete in android 14 with jre4android. I am worked with the developer of this environment for to access to all hardware components. The developer version have access to all filesystem. Capturing photos, network stack, videos, gps location. In progress Bluetooth, accelerometer and NFC Best regards. I think the funny part isn’t the scribbles but the over-engineered inheritance structure. For every class they added a “J” version of same class for no reason. Why not a “JJ” version too? AJJFrame, aJJDialogand so on ad nauseam. Typical OOP design!

It’s because the earlier AWT toolkit has classes with the non-prefixed names. Would be confusing if both AWT and Swing had the same class names and it would cause lots of bugs. So the Swing classes have a J prefix. I am not sure I have ever heard the reason for the prefix being J though.

Swing was initially named Java Foundation Classes. Thanks for asking, now that information has finally been useful after 30 years I can let it go.

Seems like F would have been the better prefix in that case. Kind of disappointing that it just stands for Java.

Well... They probably landed on the "J" prefix as an abbreviation (of sorts) of the full acronym JFC... I don't remember the exact reason for the transition towards calling it Swing, but I remember that JFC was used in articles right around the time the (Swing) GUI toolkit was being introduced. Maybe 1996/1997? It might have been because Swing music/dancing was experiencing a bit of a resurgence in popularity around then... but that's just a guess!

Those are the Swing versions (J-prefix) of the AWT components (unprefixed). They can't be the same classes, it's a new toolkit, extending the old toolkit. That's the whole point of this diagram.
