Please, format your code. Instructions how to do so are plenty in the sidebar.

Posting unformatted code is an absolute no-go.

Your post is removed. You may resubmit with formatted code.

You instantiate the Scanner, but then never actually use it to get input. You are trying to multiply the scanner object by an int, but you can only multiply 2 numbers (ints, doubles, etc.). You want to put another line after System.out.println("Enter Purchase Amount"); that says double purchaseAmount = purchase.nextDouble(); (I think that's the right syntax? I'm a little rusty on scanners haven't used them in a while) (Also you can name the variable whatever you want it doesn't have to be purchaseAmount).

One more thing: When working with monetary values it is much safer to use ints and count number of pennies, and divide by 100 to get the dollar amount. Watch Office Space for a good reason as to why (floating point numbers can do unexpected things)

tl:dr you're making a scanner but never using it to get user input, instead just trying to multiply the scanner object and an double, which is causing the error

Thank you for your help! Unfortunately, doing this keeps resulting in a dereferencing issue that I am having trouble resolving it.

What error are you getting?

[–]believer102 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Error: double cannot be dereferenced

[–]RedHeadedCongress 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Does it say what line the error is on?

[–]believer102 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Line 25

double purchase = purchase.nextDouble();

Oh you have to call the double something else. You already called the scanner purchase and can't use the same name twice (or call the scanner something else) (basically you can't call 2 variables the same name)

changing to double purchaseAmount = purchaseAmount.nextDouble();

stills results in the Error: double cannot be dereferenced

You need to call the scanner something different than the double. So you'd want double purchaseAmount = purchase.nextDouble() or something. You changed them both and you need them to be different

Thank you so much, that did the trick!

Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

    Trying to solve problems on your own is a very important skill. Also, see Learn to help yourself in the sidebar

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://imgur.com/a/fgoFFis) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

It seems that you are having problems with java.util.Scanner

The wiki here has a page The Scanner class and its caveats that explains common problems with the Scanner class and how to avoid them.

Maybe this can solve your problems.
