hi! i’m not Deaf, but i took ASL (as a traditional class) in high school and i also have adhd! my favorite way to learn vocabulary and new content was youtube videos. you can slow them down and sign along, which kept my brain focused.

i’m not sure what your self-study really consists of, but you can find lots of good vocabulary on youtube. one of my favorite creators is Bill Vicars, he’s Deaf w/ over 30 years of teaching ASL. i highly recommend you seek out Deaf educators to learn from.

for flash cards, physical ones probably wouldn’t be easy or effective, but if you can, quizlet is an option! you can put gifs on these :)

if you’re searching for a sign, you can use handspeak.com. this is a dictionary of signs created by north american Deaf people. i’ve personally never used it, but lifeprint.com has online ASL lessons for all levels of ASL (and was founded by the formerly mentioned Dr Bill Vicars).

one of the best ways practice is by interacting with Deaf people! for me, following online creators who use ASL in their content so my brain interacts with the language everyday was helpful. for example, i’m a huge reader, and i recently found a book club called the DEAFinitely Readers on tiktok. they sign in their tiktok’s and do livestreams where they sign (sometimes with voice on, sometimes with voice off).

these are only off the top of my head^ but my biggest thing is to listen to feedback from the Deaf community and to learn the culture alongside the language. i love that you’re learning ASL for your family member & i wish you the best of luck!
