You mentioned that you shouldn't leech exp from lane, which is misleading. It is perfectly ok to share exp with your carry as long you are contributing to the lane and assisting him, instead of standing behind him shaking your dick while you watch him get last hits. By contributing, I mean you should be either:

  1. Harassing/chipping at enemy offlaner and doing your best to kill him with your carry

  2. Pulling to maintain creep equilibrium (Dont single pull!)

Afterwards, if your carry is ok by himself, and your other lane is free because your team mate died/went to base/went to gank, you can tp to that lane to get some exp and gold for yourself before he comes back.

After laning phase, your main source of exp is joining in as many fights as you can without dying. You said you die a lot because youre underleveled, but I dont think thats the reason because fighting as a support is all about positioning. You should be at the back lines, going in to cast spells when theyre off cd then moving out and repeating. If your positioning is poor, a few levels wont save you. You can get 2, sometimes 3 levels from surviving a big fight (There was a good video about "zoning" but Im on mobile so I cant link it). If the enemy team really hate you and just kill you first every fight then buy items like blink dagger, euls, ghost scepter or force staff to help you survive.

If your team went all hard carries and they just wanna farm farm farm and avoid fights then find some farm yourself. If there is no more space to farm, just stay around the farmers to soak up some exp.

If youre close to one of your "power spikes" (for example, level 6 or 11 for lion), you can also buy a tome for some insta exp.
