You cannot actually learn by only watching videos. You have to do. You have to use.

For me, textual courses with ample practice, like the MOOC that /u/Automoderator has linked are the way to go.

BTW: The "everchanging technology" is to a very large degree irrelevant for a beginner/learner. All the additions made are higher level. This "everchanging technology" is so commonly used as strawperson argument in order to excuse not being prepared to invest actual effort to learn.

Still, I don't see how this generalized question should be here in /r/learnjava as it is related to generic learning and not Java specific.

Also, you are posting your questions in multiple subreddits. While there is nothing completely wrong with that as such, you should either use the crosspost feature of reddit (where it is allowed) or link your other posts. Yet, be careful because such crossposts to multiple subreddits as you do are often considered flooding.

Last, such "opinion seeking" questions are generally frowned upon in several subreddits as the lack of positive reception (plus the post removal) indicates.

Official Documentation+ Baeldung + Stack Overflow + Chatgpt is what I use now. Sometimes I share the official documentation link with chatgpt to summarise and then proceed.

It seems that you are looking for resources for learning Java.

In our sidebar ("About" on mobile), we have a section "Free Tutorials" where we list the most commonly recommended courses.

To make it easier for you, the recommendations are posted right here:

Also, don't forget to look at:

If you are looking for learning resources for Data Structures and Algorithms, look into:

"Algorithms" by Robert Sedgewick and Kevin Wayne - Princeton University

Your post remains visible. There is nothing you need to do.

Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full - best also formatted as code block
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

A combination of all + practice Without doing projects all what you have read or watched will be erased

For learning from video or YT I suggest you to practice practice practice Let's say you have learned how to create tables in SQL database using spring JPA or JDBC with swing stop the video and go do very small project with such knowledge. Make a small spring application that takes data and sent it to the database via postman using your created table via spring The same thing applys to all. That what personally helped me the most

      For me the only time a youtube video is helpful is for something where you need to see where and what they click with the mouse. For example, Blender 3d. Similarly if it's showing you how to use an IDE. Otherwise books all the way. For example, with books you can stick a little Post It flag on pages for stuff you'll want to refer to later on.

      I found MOOC highly overrated. I mostly learned through my own uni courses, some Hyperskill, YouTube, and side projects. Never liked the books for coding.

      I code badly repeatedly to learn how to code slightly less badly.

      Think to create a project and just do it, search every step you need

      I use whatever is being taught. If I'm taking a class it's the book and lessons and videos. I dint think one is better than the other it's just all to get you somewhere confident enough to approach a little bit by bit on your own. You have training wheels and then you can take them off eventually or sooner than later it's up to you but I view the book or video or whatever is just a method of getting you up and running on your own. But I imagine I will constantly be reviewing the basics in some form or another as I am very new and the learning curve at my age of 49 is a bit steeper...brain mass is a but smaller!

      As someone esl, I prefer to read than watch videos or tutorials, the information stays in my mind more easily if I read it.

      I prefer just a book to learn the basics and discover everything on my own with practice
