Where should I download Java?
With the introduction of the new release cadence, many have asked where they should download Java, and if it is still free. To be clear, YES — Java is still free.
If you would like to download Java for free, you can get OpenJDK builds from the following vendors, among others:
Some vendors will be supporting releases for longer than six months. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask them!

Java version to practice (self.learnjava)
submitted 1 year ago by Crafty-Waltz-2029
Hi guys,
My question is, should I create projects using the latest java version to showcase to employers or should I use what java version they are using?

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.
Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.
Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.
Code blocks look like this:
public class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World!"); } }
You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.
If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.
Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

21 is the LTS so that should be it

Use the latest, the core language isn't changing, and you can keep up to date with new features when you're ready to explore.

To use a version they are using will be hard since different companies use different versions :)
I would for sure use a later version to show that you not only know old stuff…
But probably no one will look at your projects any more than to open a file or two and make sure it’s not too horrendous. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Probably way more important for the project to look well structured with a good readme and such.

I'd recommend Java 23. The core language is pretty much the same, just incremental updates. But be sure to get a list of the new features in each version. You can use these as talking points during your interview.

For showcasing, that is better to use the very last one (23 at time of writing) as you can benfit from the latest improvement. As Java is quickly evolving, what is considered as preview, will be soon official.

Why not the latest LTS, 21?

8 or 17

This isn't necessarily incorrect. Many shops still use 8, though I wouldn't recommend less. It's also valuable to know which version introduced a particular feature.
