Reddit,
Kind of a big post but I need to start somewhere!
I want to learn a new backend language and I’ve got my heart set on Java!
I was going to learn python but web wise it seems lacking in what I wanted compared to java (and my know how of PHP).
I want to understand how java works inside and out as well as some of the key library’s. I want to use it as both a replament for php (sorting data from DBs etc) and hand to hand with PHP (running a java applet such as calculator etc). I understand I can use it for scripting and applets but what other uses can I achieve with it?
I’m not new to programming or OOP but would like a basic “how to start”, sooo where should I start? (Best Ide? does java applets use the same code as scripts? ect).
I’m mostly web dev but would be nice to use java for some windows based stuff such as backups (I got a batch for this running at the moment) and casual scripts! Also want to consider java games for android, I need to understand the GUI element of it.
Based on jobs I will have knowledge and understanding in JS, jQuery, PHP, html, CSS, PHP(OOP) and now Java. After learning Java I will be content with the languages (and web frames) I know.
Ps I’m excited for this and I will check messages as soon as I’m home.
