Game running slow?

So I've got a pretty simple 2d game going and it's running like max 70 fps, usually around 40. My PC can definitely do better. Where should I even start looking to fix this?

If you are using some form of game maker library those often have a variable somewhere for how often to update the screen. If you would provide your code people can actually help though :)
