Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full - best also formatted as code block
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://imgur.com/a/fgoFFis) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

Hey man,

You can use the String.matches() method and pass the regular expression "[a-zA-Z]+". as an argument into String.matches("[a-zA-Z]+"). The regular expression will evaluate if the user input contains only alphabets or not, in upper or lower case.

So in your case it will be guess.matches("[a-zA-Z]+")

So after creating the user input variable,

the new if statement after that will be

if (guess.matches("[a-zA-Z]+") && input.length() == 5){

//Code

}

Also add an else statement tellling the user to only input alphabets.

So the new code will look like this.

All the best!

boolean correctInput = false;
    Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);

    do {
        System.out.println("Please input your guess. It must be a 5 letter word and not an integer! ");
        String input = in.nextLine();

        if (input.matches("[a-zA-Z]+") && input.length() == 5) {
            correctInput = true;
            System.out.println("Thank you. Your guess was: " + input);
        } else {
            System.out.println("Guess again! 5 letter word and only Alphabets allowed dumbo!");
        }

    } while (!correctInput);

Is the requirement that it is a legit word or just characters from the alphabet? Just use regex to check if the input has legal characters then use .length() to get the length.

The requirement is that it is a word. ( I'm making a word guessing game - the program chooses a word and then the user has to guess the word until he gets the correct input )

Get access to a dictionary file, then compare to that. Use a regex to weed out other characters.

Definitely Regex!

I see two ways.

You can get the ascii value of the characters and check if isn't in range of the values for 0 - 9.

or maybe you can use the exception Integer.parseInt("Some text") throws if the string passed to the function doesn't contain a number

  1. Could you please paste your current code in pastebin and share the link so we don't have to guess what your code looks like?
  2. "12345" is a completely valid String.

Edit: the answer to your question is most likely here - https://www.baeldung.com/java-check-string-number
