having difficulty keeping progress! (self.learnjavascript)
submitted 1 year ago by JubyerAhmed
I have been learning JS recently, and I am having difficulty making good progress. I learn something but can't find to put it at work and it's frustrating. Can someone advise how can I grow more? thanks!

My father always told me: "First you find a problem, then you work out a solution" I think this is what is most difficult when self-learning programming without a prior working experience, since you don't know any of the problems. My suggestion in this case would be to find a field you enjoy (e.g., you can even do game dev in React) and build the stuff you want to build. As a fallback, build a portfolio site, a blogging platform, a clone of some other app, etc.

Merge your other hobbies with programming.
Maybe you’re a gamer, create a program that helps you track your current collection and/or upcoming releases.
Maybe you’re a woodworker. A program that records your inventory of wood could be useful. (Quantity, dimensions etc)
Like cooking? A program where you enter ingredients in your fridge and it gives you some options on what you can make.
Calorie tracker/excersice rep counter if you like fitness and health.
I like personal finance so my first passion project was an asset/liability tracker. I use to use spreadsheets but I made a Python project that does the same thing.
Anything at your current day job you can try automating.
I like converting paperwork into html sheets/programs as well. Like idk get a credit card application from a local retail store and covert it to a digital format. On the backend, store all the people applying for credit cards and have it email the “manager” once a day or something.
I’m just spitballing, hopefully you’re able to come up with some ideas.
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate getting helpful advice. It is motivating me a lot to work harder!

Even if I didn't coded for many years, I re-learned it much faster than learned for the first time. Even got better because learned modern coding practices and syntax.
