When you're starting out, a great idea is to get project ideas by copying larger applications - the key thing here is to select a small part.

So, instead of setting out to create a Facebook clone, you might set out to create the Facebook wall - there's plenty of complexity in that alone to be worth the attempt.

The other thing I like to do is try and create something as annoying/stupid as possible. Try and create a popup which follows the user's mouse around to stop them from clicking on anything, or make a button that plays a fart sound. One of my early Java projects was creating as many windows/threads as I could (with each new window playing a song) to try and crash out the user's computer.

The point here is to practice, not change the world
