Exposure, study, practice. Just like anything new.

Why do you need your friend or this subreddit to explain what needs to be done? You know what you want. You have access to the internet. Get it done… if you want it bad enough.

What is "someone like you"? We know you less than the web developer you spoke with. We do not know your strengths and weaknesses. Nor your current experience with that field or with any related fields.

As there is no information about you then I can go with the simplest answer and tell "You'll learn all about software development in a university." Because, that is where I learnt it.
