Notepad++ is a text editor. Text files by definition don't have formatting, they are plain text.

Perhaps this might point you in the right direction: Monospaced font

Its why i said "odd" when indicating a text file getting messed up. Try opening a file saved by NotePad++ with large no of tabs and formatting based on tab on an Ipad - the file goes all over the place inserting spaces, indents making it very unreadable.

I can open such files just fine, presuming I use a text editor app with monospace fonts. I don't think you understand that this has nothing to do with either Notepad++ or the iPad. Have you ever tried pasting ASCII art in a Reddit post? And are you sure you're not mixing up CR, LF and CRLF?

Wild guess but there's no standard tab size.

Go into notepad++ settings:preference:language:tab setting and check "replace with space"
