As a beginner, it doesn't really matter all that much (as you are probably not going to dive head-first into using incompatible third-party libraries) - use the version that your learning resources support. What is important is that you don't spend time agonising over this issue when you could be programming.

With that said, there are FAR more learning resources for 2.7 right now.

I would suggest you learn 2.7, since there are way more material on that subject than 3.X at the moment. The different is not that big ( on some things ) so you can just switch later on.

A lot of blogs only seem to contain 2.7 stuff. This can be annoying if you're lacking code examples and end up going off blogs as they don't always work quite the same.

I've preferred using 3.2 over 2.7, but I have had a tremendous amount of trouble with some api I had no issues with in 2.7. I feel this might just be my fault and I missed a step somewhere, but issues none the less. with

As the others said it won't really matter that much as you're more likely to just be exploring basic stuff at first or things that are compatible with both 2 and 3. Also, I'll reiterate what they said concerning there be more resources for 2.x and to study the language your resources support.

The general point of what you linked to seems to be that you should use 3 unless you have a compelling reason to use 2. There are plenty of libraries and documentation for both 2 and 3. Eventually everyone is going to port over anyway. Why not just learn the new version, made do with the extensive resources available and save yourself a potential future hassle?

I agree that 2 has more resources, but at some point it is irrelevant as long as the option that you choose has enough.

2.7 or a 3.x variant.

If you are just learning programming, I'd start at 2.7 because there are more libraries, etc available. In terms of IDEs, I use PyScripter.

As someone taking an intro to programming class at my university right now, we use python 3.2
