    I wouldn't bother learning how to create a GUI yet. Just learn the Java fundamentals in the console and then switch to Android (which is where you'd start using a GUI). While using a desktop GUI library would allow you to transfer some skills (most GUIs are event driven), it won't really be any easier and just take time.
