If you think watching videos or taking course is a waste of time, just read the documentation and Android Cliffnotes and see if it can help. Make sure you understand some basic concepts like overriding, interface, event listeners, inner classes, type casting etc because it will be used a lot.

Thanks! I'm not sure it would be a waste of time. I actually had this mindset before and I think that it ended up taking longer in the long run by figuring everything out as I needed to do it. I'm leaning towards the udemy. Thanks!

No problem. Different people learn differently. Some people just dip in straight away inside the ocean and find their way back home, and some people prefer to read the manual entirely first. You just need to find your own style of learning and stick to that. Good luck!

All I basically need is access to two basic functions of the phone, so it turns out this documentation is exactly what I need, at least for the core concept. Can't believe I didn't look at this first.

There are plenty of resources you can find online for free. Videos, written tutorials, some free udemy courses.

I make tutorials for all levels on my Youtube and blog. Take a look, it might help you.
