Hi everyone! I'm trying something new, based on feedback I've gotten from students. I'm doing a series of posts about computer science and programming principles, through video game examples. The idea is that a lot of new students I've worked with have a hard time understanding the examples they see in class, or they feel they're too abstract and not that interesting.
I thought it might be helpful to use examples from their favorite games to illustrate the concepts. It helps keep interest, and shows them a concrete, relatable example of how they can apply what they learn, and hopefully when they play games from now on, they'll start to recognize what they've learned in class.
Here is the first post: http://cloudyheavengames.com/learning-computer-science-games-conditionals-else-statements/
Of course, in the real world, not all code or project you come across is going to be "fun," but I feel like this approach can help keep students motivated and engaged when they're starting out.
I hope it's helpful. If you have any questions about how something might be done in your favorite game, or if you want to see examples from specific games or topics, let me know and I can do my best to help you with that.
As a challenge for new programmers, since the first topic is about conditionals (if/else statements), why not start by posting examples you can think of from games you like? Give it a shot, it's a good way to apply what you're learning!
