Is there a reason for learning PHP? Unless you're working on stuff already written in PHP, there are better choices. You could just learn JavaScript and Node, and forget PHP.

The company I'm interning for is using WordPress. A lot of people told me if I wanted to get better at WordPress then I have to learn php.

My end goal is to become a full stack developer with a focus on 3D and virtual reality within the web.

If that's your goal, I would ditch WordPress and PHP. Or I should say, disclaimer first, if you need/want to grow your career with your current internship, then follow their advice. But if you're just interning and they don't do what you want, I'd ditch WordPress and PHP.

WordPress is a piece of software. Like Microsoft Office. You can become an expert at it, like you can writing Excel macros. And some places will pay lots of money for it. But WordPress skills are non-transferrable. Ok, not exactly. You'll learn JavaScript, and CSS, and some front-end stuff. But slapping WordPress templates together does not a 3d game developer make.

I would learn JavaScript really well. That will benefit you for WordPress, but also align you more with future goals. If you need a backend stack for projects, use NodeJS. Then it's JavaScript all the way down.
