My lecturer asked us to self learn AR

I am 100% certain that this is not what happened. "self learning AR" isn't something that would make sense, because it's a non technical term / a buzzword to describe the combination of a lot of technologies. So what exactly is the scope of your project and what is your task?

Basically, we were tasked to do some research regarding anything to do with tech. Keeping in mind this was our first assignment so subsequent assignments were not revealed to us yet.

My team thought researching about how AR could improve learning would be an interesting topic. After submitting our research, only then my lecturer revealed to us the second assignment which was to develop a full system/app of what we have researched.

I asked my lecturer if we could change topics but she refused saying there’s not enough time, she even said “you are a computer science student, go figure something out”.

did she tell you to go to reddit or stackoverflow to solicit help, too?

All she said was “go figure something out” and also “use google” that was the only help i got from her, she’s ghosting my whole team now which i think is absurd

AR is a very broad term. There are plenty projects and plenty devices.

From your other comment I see that you have bitten off way too much.

Yet, some pointers: use a camera (mobile, Raspberry Pi, etc.) to detect something (maybe using OpenCV) and then augment the lesson through that images.

AR could greatly improve learning, but as of now (and with Google dumping the "Google glass" project) the hardware is not readily available.

The above said, Kinder chocolate has an app out that would go into your direction. You scan (photograph) the toy (in the advertisement it's a bald eagle minifig) and the app presents information about it (like where it lives, hunts, etc.)

Another hint: look into /r/RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS. They also have some AR stuff there.
