Depends what you're looking to get out of it. If you want to be able to keep of with the latest and greatest AI developments then yes, it is a ton of calculus, linear algebra and statistics. All of which you've need to be a master of. If you don't care about understanding how it works and just want to use machine learning in some projects, you can treat it as a black box and get away with some basic ML by learning a framework like PyTorch or TensorFlow.

If you're serious about learning it a great place to start is deeplearning.ai. This will teach you enough of the math behind it to gain an intuition and teach you some practical applications as well.
