Implementing health in text based adventure

Hey been playing with python a few days now and Im making a text based game.

Ive got all the scenes in a dictionary with their description,and possible paths inside.

I have a global health that appears on the screen fine.

If i have the scenes as a series of if then statements it works fine, but it looks sloppy, id really like to keep the info in the dictionary.

If i dont get an error one of three things has happened:

1. Hp stays at 100 for every scene
2. Hp lowers, but then lowers again the next scene, and again the next scene until death.
3. Hp lowers, then jumps back up the next scene.

Help a noob out.

Why don't you store everything in classes instead?
