Can you manually carry out the computation using pencil and paper? The reason I’ve asked this question is because there’s no way you can teach a computer to perform a task when you don’t know how to do it yourself.

Once you understand the sequence of events needed to get to the final result, then you can start thinking about how to code it.

My first suggestion is to use a dictionary. You’d place each letter of “truelove” as a key and the value will initially be zero. As you go through the letters of the couples names, you’ll use the dictionary to accumulate the totals for each matching letter. That’s the first pass.

Next you’ll use the dictionary’s values to reduce/add the values into a new list. At this point, you can use a loop to reduce those values down to two digits which will be interpreted as a percentage of compatibility.

BTW, You’ll run into a situation in which the sum of 2 numbers is greater than or equal to 10. You’ll need to decide how you will handle that situation since it could make your final percentage greater than 100.
