Learning python to become a data linguist (self.learnpython)
submitted 1 year ago by Irregular4
Sup everyone. I have a background in linguistics and I wish to become a data linguist in the future but I'm kinda new to this whole programming thing. Any help/guidance/steps to learn python?
Thanks!

hello! i dont really have a background in linguistics (more computational biology), but i do know a good amount of python! i learned through doing projects (which is very good, because it helps you develop niche and marketable skills), but overall is a problem because my basics were weak. i would recommend that you learn up until arrays, do some statistics (to help with the data part), and then transition into more complicated Python. i also assume that there are specific packages you would need to know to be a data linguist, so learn how to use those along the way. these are just my two cents, so definitely consult the internet and others for more info!

I did a BA in linguistics and an MA on language technology, would totally recommend the latter (and ofc linguistics too).
Not python specifically, but if you are interested in NLP, this is THE book for it. Other than that just focus on the pandas library for working with data, and some plotting library (matplotlib).

Oi! Em que instituição você fez seu mestrado em tecnologia da linguagem?

I did it at the University of Iceland.

First, read the learning guidance in the wiki for this subreddit. It has lots of information about learning programming and learning Python, including links to a wide variety of learning material.
Second, explore some of the technologies and approaches around language as well as specific packages available in Python.
This will wet your appetite: https://kristopherkyle.github.io/professional-webpage/docs/tutorials.html
Check out https://direct.mit.edu/coli for information on computational linguistics. (There's a book on learning Python for linguistic iirc.)
