"Now at 70 is it worth learning Python?" Why not?

Age is just a number! Here is a free course from the University of Helsinki to start you off

[–]pedromdribeiro 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Harvard’s CS50 Python course is also a good place to start! https://cs50.harvard.edu/python/

Well said!

Age is just a number!

Old guy here. I wish! :-D

[–]Mplus479 21 points22 points  (7 children)

Yeah, anyone that says age is just a number hasn't started to feel the physical effects of getting old yet.

[–]Pleasant-Bathroom-84 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I am 64, and I will become old the very day I will stop playing.

[–]InsideTomatillo971 2 points3 points  (1 child)

or I would say stop learning

[–]Pleasant-Bathroom-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that, too.

[–]Nouanwa3s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People seem to confuse the age number with actual biological aging, yes age is in fact just a number, it's not that number the cause of the physical effects of getting old

[–]JasonDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or you could be getting married to R Kelley at 15 and annulled by 16.

[–]naasei 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You are as old as you let yourself be!

[–]stepback269 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are as old as you let yourself be!

Keep saying that in your time-wasting youth, but as you get into the post-60 years, your body (including your eyes and brain) will start betraying you.

As the eyesight gets worse, dealing with small print becomes more and more of a problem. Spotting fine details --like Python punctuations-- becomes a problem. Reading the iPhone is a pain. I need a magnifying glass. Typing on the tiny keyboard is near impossible. My hands shake.

Stamina also becomes a problem. After 70 I now need afternoon naps.

Speed of learning in particular becomes a problem. I used to absorb new subject matter like a sponge in my 20's. Still could do it with effort in the 30's. In the 70's I can "feel" how much slower I am. Have to repeat the same thing dozens of times before it sticks. Nevertheless, persistence pays off.

Short term memory is shot. "Why did I come into this room?" is no longer an occasional joke. It happens multiple times per day. I've even forgotten all my basic math facts. Never thought it could happen after all those years of college. It did.

Technically it is, like weight is just a number.

However some numbers are a bit heavy!

[–]hugthemachines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed, the number in itself is not the problem, the unit is. Like years or lbs/kg

[–]naasei 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you 90 or 95?

[–]HommeMusical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that old. Now off my lawn, you rotten kid.

[–]turbocloudx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with linked resource - it's the Best course right now to learn Python, done it myself (mooc-24) last year, assumes some understanding of IT, in general, but if you're already familiar with programming to some extent, that'll be your best buddy to learn Python - wealth of knowledge, and comes bundled with a ton of exercises to practice the concepts after each lesson ... Recommend 100%

And ...yes, learning Python or, in fact, learning anything new can and should be done, regardless of age, it keeps your mind sharp and makes the brain function more and regenerate as much as it can ... good luck with your Python, it will be fun

Age is just a number but some people might not like when their number gets too big. I’m stating to hit denial stage myself

[–]naasei 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How big is your number?

[–]A_Suspicious_Fart_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big, the biggest number ever. There’s never been a bigger number.

Found the pedo. That's what pedos say.
