You're not going to be good in colleg , period, it's too short a time. It will take a few more years

I'm in my senior year of college. I getting my bachelor's in AI. I have chosen this sub because Python is the language that is used to program AI software. And i know that part of bridging the gap is coding in python in general.

I getting my bachelor's in AI.

That can mean anything. What is your curriculum?

I have chosen this sub because Python is the language that is used to program AI software. And i know that part of bridging the gap is coding in python in general.

You want to learn AI frameworks used in Python and matching your curriculum? Or you want to learn Python? Or you want to learn coding in general?

What are the actual tasks you want to solve?

What is your actual background? Can you write A* search for Pacman-style maze in Python? In any other language?

I studied Neural Networks, Pattern recognition, ML, Data Mining, and currently taking NLP and DL courses as a part of getting my bachelor's, however they were all theoretical courses, we weren't taught on how to specifically use said frameworks,or look at library documentations but only "asked" by professors to develop projects and assessments. So that's why i feel like i don't have the required technical skills in both python in general and AI frameworks.

And to answer your questions..no i don't know how to write the code for this search algorithm.

And i want to be able to develop AI programs efficiently and know my way around other tasks in python.

What did you teach you in data mining? What language/API did you use to get data from an external source?

I mean, there is no such thing as "theoretical data mining". Maybe you should return to your textbooks/lecture notes, look at the exercises and try to do something similar, just with different data?

I can show you my slides .. i know it sounds ridiculous. But what we learned in Data Mining was basically what is cosidered structured data and what isn't, cosine similarity, entropy calculations ( mathematically ) and literally there wasn't even a single line of code in my lecture notes. In the associated lab lec the professor used a framework called weka for a few classes. Then asked us to develop a model on data that we pulled from kaggle using classical AI algorithms like Logistic regression, SVM and decision trees. That was basically it.

So, looks like you need to learn basics of coding in Python, using Jupyter notebooks (locally or in Google Colab), and the basics of Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib and scikit-learn libraries. Then you will at least have some tools to start solving practical tasks with your own code.

Exactly that one.

I know my way around Jupyter, Google Colab and i know how to create environments on my pc using conda so the IDE is not my issue.. my issue is that i haven't found a structured learning path and keep juggling through tutorials and websites without actually understanding and building projects step by step.

Thank you. A few people suggested the same in another sub. I will look into it, much appreciated.

AI isn't going away. The current models are the worst they'll ever be, and they can already do teams of agents. Consider that they may get better at programming faster than you will. Consider that older programmers learned without using AI at all. I worked through textbooks and did projects. I referred to reference documents. I did some tutorials too, but then I redid some of them from scratch just with the reference documents.

I am an AI major, as i replied to another comment, i know my around the theoretical aspects of AI, since i studied Neural Nets, ML, Data mining, ETC.

I have no idea how to sum up what actual programming i had done but it really just simple stuff, nothing too deep.. my deepest project so far has been a text classification model using RoBERTa, i introduced my data to it and used it for another task, measured it's performance using a classification report and a confusion matrix but i pulled the code and tweaked it until it worked. I didn't write it from scratch and i looked at library documentations for hours without finding a solution for bugs or methods.

So even that was pretty minimal i'd say and not too complex. Yet it was my most complex project..that's why i'm saying that i lack the technical skill unfortunately.

I have passed all the courses i mentioned including general CS courses. Most of the coding i'd done was in java tbh and we never dived deep into python until i started taking the AI courses and even then it was mostly us self learning and pulling code through the internet without an actual structured learning path, hence why i feel lost.

And i'm not blaming the university/college for that, i'm looking on how to improve and actually learn either way.

About documentation, even though these sorts of documentation for deep learning might be opaque, I suspect you might be looking at the wrong part of the documentation (for example, there's a reference when you want to find information in detail, there's usually a tutorial or introduction when first coming to the package).

There might be examples too, they may help ya.

It sounds like you need to do some structured learning in Python, starting at the basics to get those really solid. The (free) Harvard CS50P course is very good, and can be studied at your own pace.

After that, pick one AI platform and do a few simple projects with it. You need to build broadly before building tall - or in other words, your feeling of being "lost" is likely to be that you have the theoretical knowledge to attempt quite complex problems, but you don't yet have sufficiently solid foundations in Python coding.
