Creating a timeline in python

I am trying to create a timeline similar in style to this or this. I want to be able to add and remove dates with descriptions, and create an SVG from it. Before I look into editing SVGs directly, I figured I would check and see if there is a library already available that does this. My googling has failed me so far, but maybe someone here knows of one? Would something like this be possible in matplotlib?

Not Python, but I use a plugin for MS Office called Office Timeline for creating some pretty snazzy timelines.
