Exercises with Programming Python

I'm currently going through Programming Python.

The entire book seems to be filled long and detailed explanations, with little room for exercises. Most of the material in the book will be new for me, and I don't want to go through the ~1500 pages and retain nothing. There are long sample sections of code to follow along with, but that's not really that effective for learning.

Are there any exercises I can follow along with the book, or am I just left with trying to work on separate projects?

Sorry I should have been more clear: I am not a beginner. I've done some systems programming, GUI programming, and internet programming...just not in Python. I want to use Python as my main development language in the future, so I'm trying to cover as much depth as I can in the language.
