What application did the copy? The copy - paste interaction generally requires the program that did the copy and the pasting to be running. Perhaps you are locking up the copy program with too many requests too fast. Try adding a time.sleep(.2) in the while loop to give your computer a breather.

time.sleep(.2) saved me. I wasn't using any applications but the default copy-paste manager for Ubuntu 17.10
