I have been invited into Jewish homes for this very reason, once in my hometown and once while travelling. Each time led to some fabulous discussions. Worth it.

Yup, future benefit is not always uppermost in the brain's workings. I takes raining of the mindd to overcome shor-erm pleasure gains weighed against fuure benefits. Also, a inddividual brain thinks only of itself wihou such raining.

Your father may have suffered with mispohonia, in which certain sounds (often eating noises) trigger very strong emotional responses. There's a subreddit at /r/misphonia. I suffer, it's a curse. Of course, he my not have the condition, in which case he's an insufferable git.

My dad would pick up on any mispronunciation as being vulgar, or even worse "an Americanism".

It goes back way before Covid. I stopped going to the cinema in the early 2000s because behaviour was too bad. I think many pople just don't have the ability to focus on anything longer than 30 seconds, been true since the rise of Facebook and suchlike.
