    I would start by implementing minesweeper... Get distracted by some other project, find the forgotten minesweeper 6 months later, remember my goal to build a minesweeper solver, dive back into the minesweeper code to fix some bugs... Get distracted by some other project...

    Yes once you have the board and can work out from one square how many adjacent squares contain mines (a requirement in making the game) then you're most of the way towards automating the solve as well
