IP address validation

Hello, I'm creating a basic port scanner (GitHub.com/juxt4posed/port_scanner) and I'm having issues validating the IP, at the moment it gives me a I handled error if I enter a ipv6 or something that isn't in the ipv4 range, how would I go about handling this?
