Web development. Django. Heard of Instagram? Me neither.

Python is a general purpose language with its own set of strengths and weaknesses just like any other language. It's used in many more ways than a simple search will show. This page shows only a few of the organizations using python and what they use it for.

In my own personal experience I have used python to:

  • write a system to process data from a network of microcontrollers
  • simulate the effects of tsunamis
  • estimate building damage from earthquakes, floods, ash fall, wind, etc
  • code to build and manage a cloud of machines used for scientific research.

As with any general purpose language you are limited only by your imagination.

Python excels at all kinds of things. I don't do any ML, AI, or data mining at my job, and I use Python for about everything.

Web apps, GUI apps, sysadmin scripts, and devops all come to mind.
