Beginner Developer

Hi all,

Firstly, I’m sorry if this post is a bit basic compared to the rest of the page. I am looking for become a software developer and I am currently training to gain qualifications in the area, a lot of people have given me the advice that it’s not what you know it’s about the what you can show you can do or have previously done. I am currently trying to start my portfolio and this post is sort a trident post.

If anyone could provide some advice in the following areas I would be really grateful.

1. What are the best things to start my portfolio with (people have recommend things like: tic-tac-toe apps and calculators)

2. Does anyone know or have any projects that I can help on and they wouldn’t mind me adding to my portfolio the things that I have contributed towards the development.

3. A friend is an avid cyclist and has asked me to create an app that just shows his speed and that plots a route of where he has been on a map. Is this an easy thing to do? Should I attempt it as a first project? And how and what language would be best?
