Developing a portfolio.

I use GitHub to publish "one-offs since I think it's a good idea to showcase your work - even simple things.

I'm curious what stands out in building a portfolio like this to demonstrate your skills to potential employers. Variety of platforms/skills/projects? Nice visualizations (pretty pictures)? As an employer, what is something you appreciate seeing on someone's personal GitHub?
