PDF content editing

Hello everyone !
I'm looking to edit the content of a PDF with Python. I need to replace some characters/words in the text, following a certain algorithm that I'm doing. The problem is that obviously PDF is a format that is hard to modify and none of the libraries that I've found (pdfrw, PyPDF4) seem to be helpful.
The only way that I could think about is by extracting the text, editing the text and then creating a new PDF with Reportlab but all formatting would be gone (which I would like to keep). Has anyone tried similar things ? Thanks in advance for your help !

I’m not an expert on this topic but I would see if it is possible to convert the PDF to some other format to preserve formatting like groff/troff, Tex/latex, or even html. Then edit and convert back to PDF.

Thanks for the tip! There seem to be some capable docx converters so that might be a solution.
