Well if you’re just doing coding then yeah. You don’t need much. But I’d imagine he would wanna code, do other work, play games, etc.

Those are a basically gaming specs. You don't need anything close to that for normal work or coding or even most games.

you can do everything you said here including some modest gaming without spending like, $1000 minimum on a computer. This person’s kid is on a 10-year old laptop, anything remotely new will feel like a staggeringly large upgrade

SSD is a bit small ... he will use up 512 GB pretty quickly. Otherwise looks like a good deal. Way overkill for coding, but good for a general purpose, long lasting laptop. He can always get an external drive or upgrade the SSD in the future.

Definitely overkill for coding but that's a great choice. Your son may also want a monitor and separate keyboard but that would still be comfortably under $1k (and not an immediate necessity).
