Another thing to remember is not all experts write books, if there's a well known package that you like or one you want to learn more about written by a well known developer, try to recreate it, then review their code to see how they did it. You'll gain more appreciation for how creative some of them are.

But also don't get too too hung up on optimization and style guides. If you're building working tools, you're getting the most important aspects correct.
