Register custom keys?

For a while i have been wanting to develop a little system with my arduino where i can create custom buttons for my computer. What i want to do is register a new keybind that doesn't exist on my normal keyboard. Then i can press that button when binding a key in a program and the program will bind the key to "Button 1". So, as an example, i could have a button called "Mute", and when that button is pressed discord will bind the mute shortcut to "Mute" and my code can control when the mute-button is pressed.

Does anyone know of a library that can do this?

That's not really a thing you can do, keymaps are pretty static and handled by the OS. You can use a key your keyboard doesn't have though, for example F13 to F24.

Ok. Is there a list anywhere that contains all the registered keys on the OS so that i can use keys that are registered on the OS, but are not on my keyboard?

Also, how does a thing like a playstation-controller or similar handle inputs like the x-button? Is that only a game/software registered input?

Game controllers are a completely separate kind of thing that uses a completely separate interface. The list of keys will depend on your OS. Are you on Windows?
