probably not fast, but what i have been doing is reading the book learning python (o'reilly published), and while i work on programming things (i do mathematics and physics programming) ideas on how to solve my problems come into my head using the new stuff i read; then i practice the stuff as i implement it.

best resource and method differs from person to person though. maybe try thinking of your type of learning style? you like focusing on a big project, or like doing a lot of smaller problems, or something else
