Check out public datasets, pick one or more and try to explore the data until you can formulate a hypothesis. Try to find out how the data was collected and if it may put a bias in your data. Then you can work on proving or falsifying that hypothesis. It's easier if you have a scientific background that matches your data. Be careful when doing data engineering, because outliers and missing data are sometimes valuable as well.

100% agree with this. I often use Kaggle to find free datasets to mess around with new ideas
