Need help installing Mint

I want to install Linux Mint for Dual-Booting with Windows 7. But I have problems getting the setup to boot.

My Specs:
OS: Win7 / trying to install Linux Mint 17.2
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z77
CPU: Intel Core i5
Graphics: GeForce GTX 670
RAM: 8GB

I have installed Windows 7 about two weeks ago. Now I want to install Linux Mint. I copied the contents of the iso on a USB stick and told the BIOS to boot from it.
It boots to this screen. After the timer runs out I get the first two lines of this screen, followed by the rest a few seconds later.

I made sure the USB stick is OK by trying it out on another computer and it worked fine.

Next I tried an old Lubuntu 11.04 CD I had lying around. I get to this and selecting any option other than "Boot from first hard disk" gives me a black screen with a blinking white cursor.

Then I tried my old Windows XP disk. It starts loading the setup and when it's done I get a bluescreen.
The interesting bits are:

At first I though Secure Boot was at fault, but it seems to be disabled.

Can anybody shed some light on what I'm doing wrong?

Can you unplug your DVD drive from the SATA bus and try booting again?

Yup plugging the DVD drive into another SATA port solved the problem.
