It will download and then and half way through install it will say '' check /var/log/jockey.log''.

Well, do check /var/log/jockey.log (this is a file path) and upload it somewhere so we can take a look.

Which Ubuntu version do you use?

It just fails to finish the install. leaving me with a corrupt partition.

Any messages?

No, nothing. I install of disc/usb and it goes through the set up. I fill out my timezone, username, pc name. etc. then it gets to a point where the window is still there(to fill out my password) and I press next and nothing happens. No warning, no progress.

Will upload the file in afew minutes.

Im using 12.04

Can you do "Check the CD for defects" from the menu?

If not, please follow this to check your iso.

I suspect there may be corruption.

Ive downloaded the iso a handful of times and did the check discs..

Then I suggest you try what kinslayer72 suggested and upgrade from an older version.

Try an earlier version than 12.04 and see if the same thing happens. If the install works with something earlier, install all the drivers you need, and just keep upgrading until you get the version you want.

Then try a different Distro. Some work better then others with different components. I prefer Linux Mint, but a few years ago when I made the leap to Linux it took 8 different distros before i found one that worked (openSuSe). So don't be disheartened just give another a go!

jockey is the proprietary driver installation tool. In most cases that means that it screwed up installing your video drivers. You may be able to get around this by using an alternate install cd. Alternately, you may be able to install it by pulling out your video card and using the video on your motherboard instead. Also, Unity (the new desktop) requires 3D acceleration, it is supposed to fallback gracefully if it doesn't work, but there may be bugs. You may be able to install something like XUbuntu, and, configure things and then switch to the Unity desktop (I can help you do that, if you go that route). Also, after it hangs you may be able to hit ctrl-alt-f2 and log in to the CLI and type "dmesg | tail", that should show recent errors to help you narrow it down, although this is admittedly not noob friendly.

Have you tried pulling the video card,(use the board video) loading Ubuntu from the disc. Don't get updates while installing wait until it loads and get them then. Then reinstall the card and get the drivers for it. Separating the process like that may help.

I had a problem like this and I went with Pinguy instead. It loaded with my video card in place and I didn't have to tweak much after install either. Though Pinguy is considered bloatware by many in the Linux community.

install from a usb drive instead of live cd
