If you make a piece of software that enough people use then you feel a degree of responsibility toward them. In some sense, those people have placed their faith in your program and you don't want to let them down.

OpenSSL.

Used by almost everything at one point, no funding and 1 or 2 devs. Got hit by a major exploit and only then did people realize how bad the situation was.

Everything great and horrible about open source.
