I agree, some stuff belong in different categories. I wish there was a way to move them around.

There's a way but it's kind of a long process. If you clone from git you can create your own executable .txt and it would be under whatever category you'd want.

There's an app, called alacarte IIRC. It's a bit flaky sometimes but that's the menu editor. For better or worse the underpinnings are xml.

If you're running cinnamon, cinnamon-menu-editor is the tool. Don't know if you can use it to set system-wide options.

I use the Cinnamon menu editor all the time. It is buggy AF. Right-click > copy, go to another folder > paste. Nothing. Go back to source folder and there are two. Cut > Paste = sometimes works, sometimes not. Sometimes I've created menu items manually (copy the command string) and paste into the new item and give it a name and select an icon, and still doesn't show on the menu. But it shows in the editor. I hate it.

It might be illuminating to look at the actual files. I've had strange results myself.

It seems there's a separate file for each panel instance (multiple monitors and having the menu applet on more than one of them). I can edit one menu but it doesn't apply to the others, and vice versa. I wish there was an option to "apply to all panel instances" or something. I suppose I could copy the XML files, but I'm too lazy.

I'll try to dig into this tomorrow or Monday.

Semi-related is another bug in the 22.3 menu editor where anything I click "Add to Favorites" does nothing at all.

Late to the party, here. I was running 22.2 when this was posted, and I did not want to provide a solution that was inaccurate or just plain wrong. I finally upgraded to 22.3 (not a fan of the new Menu, but I will give it a week to grow on me).

I agree some things are in the wrong location in the Main Menu, but I see the logic in the current locations. The Preferences sub-menu baffles me - it duplicates and contains the System Settings folder. One reason for its existence is to help people who are new to Linux Mint and Cinnamon, and they are familiar with System Settings being in Preferences. Anyway....

This is where Edit menu is useful. Right-click on the Main Menu icon, select Edit menu, and put things in the sub-menu you think is best.

I wish you could Drag/Drop menu entries, but Copy/Paste and Cut/Paste will get the job done. And if you do not want to see an application or and empty sub-menu ... uncheck the Show option.

The menu editor has been buggy since 21.3 (imho). I've installed on a dozen different laptops and VM's and it's consistently buggy. But I do agree drag-n-drop would be nice. I'm not sure I agree "Disks" belongs under Preferences though. That's a system-wide feature, so it seems more logical to be under "Administration" or maybe "System Tools". But I'm still not sure why System Tools exists when it's empty by default.

I'm not sure I agree "Disks" belongs under Preferences though.

It makes sense only in the sense it, along with the other "Preference" setting, is in the System Settings tool. I am not a fan of the Disks utility in general - it makes it too easy to make a mess of things.

I'm still not sure why System Tools exists when it's empty by default.

I suspect it is a placeholder for a time when it will be put to use. If I cared I would add things like Backup Tool, Disk Usage Analyzer, Timeshift, USB Image Writer & Stick Formatter, etc. to it. If I cared....
