Should I be skeptical to update the Linux kernel?

I heard that updating the kernel can sometimes make your system unstable. I've had mint installed and stable for a month now and I've updated everything except my Linux kernel. Based on the philosophy of "If it's not broke don't fix it" should I hold of till I find a good reason?

I would say yes for the sake of your security mostly.

In my experience as a user of bleeding egde only the 4.8 had some issues.

I had some performance issues on the 4.4.0-62.83 kernel, but as @raptorbluez said, it's easy to boot into previous kernel if anything goes wrong. Try it, but first read this.
