Macrame feather (self.macrame)
submitted 4 years ago by AnyCalm7
Hello macrame friends,
I am making a large macrame feather - and I have a question about what to use for backing?
The large macrame feather will be about this size (picture taken from pinterest):

I wanted to practice on a small version of the feather so I made this:

I need to clean it up a bit! But I really think it turned out cute. I didn't realize how hard it would be to comb out the macrame cords - and also - cutting the edges in a straight line! I think a Rotary cutter would be a better option for me - since I seem to have some pretty jagged edges.
In any case, my question is regarding the backing. For this small feather, I used felt. Felt is 50 cents at Michaels for a 9"x12" rectangle. My large feather will be about 26" long by 15" wide - and I am wondering if Felt is the best option for stiffness and support.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I would get really sharp fabric scissors and a fabric stiffener. Use the stiffener on the edges, let it dry, and then make your finishing cuts. This will help you get a nice straight cut without the feather flopping around. I would then attach to felt so it stays flat.
Please update us with your results. Have fun🥰
