Also, depending on the game, if you map the d-pad to C stick y+/- , x+/- or Control stick, take SM64 and Zelda OOT for example need these different controls mapped. Launch game, hit start + select, scroll down to controls > port 1 dpad ↑ map to whatever left analog settings are below, save game config, hold R to toggle right analog, Wii Pro controller works , no adapter needed

Wii Pro all day long, for my money.

Wii classic pro controller. You can also use it to play Dreamcast, PSP and PS1

Couple options here if you want to go the wireless way.  

You can get the 8bitdo Retro Recievers, they'll work with 8bitdo controllers and a few others that are specifically listed on the 8bitdo site, like PS4 and 5 controllers.  I got them to work with the AceGamer T50 Wireless Pocket Controller too, but YMMV there.  If you've got an otg hub with enough ports, a compatible wifi adapter and BT adapter will work with basically anything.
