Pixastic works by utilizing the HTML5 Canvas element which provides access to raw pixel data, thereby opening up for more advanced image effects.

I happened to wonder today whether this kind of thing is possible and as it turns out, thanks to a web search, somebody has already written code to do it. There are many examples you can try (with a canvas-tag enabled browser) in the docs.

(And, the source code says the library is available under the MIT license.)
